Dislodged tracheostomy management

Patients with tracheostomies can have serious life threatening complications when they become dislodged. It was recognised during the COVID pandemic larger numbers of patients were having tracheostomies as part of their treatment so more members of NHS staff needed to be familiar with them.

With funding from the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia we generated a VR simulation of a dislodged tracheostomy emergency. This was successfully implemented to medical, nursing and physiotherapy members of the ICU team leading to a greater knowledge and confidence in team members to manage this emergency.
